In 1876, Jesse James and his gang rode into Northfield to rob the First National Bank.  The citizens ambushed the gang at two different places in town aborting the robbery attempt and bringing an end to the James gang raids on innocent citizens.

Today Rice County continues to be rich in history with many buildings in the County on the National Registry of Historic Places.
